Melanie Martinez wrote this song with Kinetics & One Love. She wanted to create something that captured the feeling of moving through a “tunnel” of familiar images and sounds, easing that transition to the other side, while also writing something layered that people could relate to in a grounded way.
This song is part of a group of "tunnel" themed songs, along with The Tunnel and TUNNEL VISION.
The song was ultimately scrapped and TUNNEL VISION got released instead.

The song's theme is about idealizing appearances over the truth, finding physical beauty to be materialistic. The lyrics talk about people who are obsessed with physical beauty. They suffer when they don't feel beautiful enough or they judge others who they see as not beautiful enough. This gives people "tunnel vision" as they are only focused on physical beauty.
