"Toy Chest" is an unreleased song by Melanie Martinez. It was recorded in the sessions for her debut studio album, Cry Baby, however, it was later scrapped.

The full song was leaked on May 11, 2023.

Background[]

On July 7, 2014, Melanie posted a tweet on Twitter, quoting the sampled jingle "Clean Up Song" from this song.^{[citation needed]}

Melanie confirmed during a Tumblr Q&A from July 27, 2015, that she considered "Toy Chest" to be one of the titles for her debut album before it was released as Cry Baby.^[1]

Theme[]

Trivia[]

This song samples "Clean Up Song" from the TV series "Barney & Friends".^[2]
- Melanie later interpolated another song from the series, "Do Your Ears Hang Low?" in "Fire Drill".
Toys squeaking, wiping, and wood creaking can be heard throughout the song.
The first line, "There's a little girl's room inside my head", could be a reference to the character Cry Baby.
- It is also possible the next line, "Bottles on the floor and a torn up bed", references her. It could also reference Crybaby's Mother, due to her being portrayed as an alcoholic.

"The wallpaper's ripped [...]" is a direct reference to "Dollhouse".
