"Toy Chest" is an unreleased song by Melanie Martinez. It was intended to be featured on her debut studio album, Cry Baby, however, it was later scrapped.
The full song was leaked on May 11, 2023.
Background[]
Sometime on/prior to July 7, 2014, Melanie posted a tweet on Twitter quoting the sampled "Clean Up Song".[1]
In a Tumblr Q&A from July 27, 2015, Melanie confirmed that she considered Toy Chest to be the title of her debut album before it was released as Cry Baby.[2]
Theme[]
Lyrically, "Toy Chest" seems to reflect on the singer's past turbulent relationships, symbolized through the metaphoric imagery of a messy bedroom. The song explores the fear of repeating past mistakes and hurting a new partner while expressing the desire to "clean up [her] mess for [him]" and make things right for the sake of the relationship.
Lyrics[]
[Chorus]
Clean up, clean up
Everybody, everywhere
Clean up, clean up
Everybody do your share
Clean up, clean up
Everybody, everywhere
Clean up, clean up
Everybody do your share
[Verse 1]
There's a little girl's room inside my head
Bottles on the floor and a torn up bed
The wallpaper's ripped and the flowers are dead
Holes in the wall from angry men
[Verse 2]
There's clothes on the floor, they're not my own
There's a ghost of a boy and he won't go home
I broke his heart, guess that's what I do
I know you're scared I'll do the same to you
[Pre-chorus]
I thought it was a mess before
Then I thought about my room without you
Been forever since I've seen the floor
I'm a mess, I'm a mess, I'm a motherfucking mess
I'll throw the shit outside the door
Just so I won't be without you
Don't want to be alone anymore
I'm a mess, I'm a mess, but I'll clean my mess for you
[Chorus]
Clean up, clean up
Everybody, everywhere
Clean up, clean up
Everybody do your share
Clean up, clean up
Everybody, everywhere
Clean up, clean up
Everybody do your share
[Verse 3]
You say I'm too young to know wrong from right
A clean bed's a sign of a lonely life
You have 99 reasons why we shouldn't be
That makes you more of a little girl than me
[Pre-chorus]
I thought it was a mess before
Then I thought about my room without you
Been forever since I've seen the floor
I'm a mess, I'm a mess, I'm a motherfucking mess
I'll throw the shit outside the door
Just so I won't be without you
Don't want to be alone anymore
I'm a mess, I'm a mess, but I'll clean my mess for you
[Chorus]
Clean up, clean up
Everybody, everywhere
Clean up, clean up
Everybody do your share
Clean up, clean up
Everybody, everywhere
Clean up, clean up
Everybody do your share
[Bridge]
I'll clean up my mess for you
I'll clean up my mess for you
Throw it in my toy chest for you
I'll clean up my mess for you
I'll clean up my mess for you
I'll clean up my mess for you
Throw it in my toy chest for you
I'll clean up my mess for you
[Chorus]
Clean up, clean up
Everybody, everywhere
Clean up, clean up
Everybody do your share
Clean up, clean up
Everybody, everywhere
Clean up, clean up
Everybody do your share
