"Smoke" is an unreleased song by Melanie Martinez. It was intended to be the fourth track on her extended play[note 1], Take Me to the Moon[1], however, the project was later scrapped.

A live performance of the song was posted to Melanie's YouTube channel on June 13, 2009, however, it was later taken down.

Theme[]

This song is about a little girl whose mother is always smoking in front of her, but she wants her to stop. Her father isn't around, so Melanie gives the girl advice to just stay in bed tucked under the covers.

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
Too ready his little girl, you've gone so far
Keep begging until you're smiling, you're a movie star
Songs from the 50's your mamas used to sing
Oh, in the kitchen while she's makin' dinner for your family

[Verse 2]
Keep dreaming, baby girl, keep your head up high
Waiting for your mama to sing lullabies
But daddy isn't here and mama's smoking stacks
Oh, headaches from the smokey smell
Ain't getting wrecked

[Chorus]
Closer to encourage and I'll be awake
Sing yourself to sleep, learn not to be afraid
All you have is God, always in bribery
While your lungs are filled with all the smoke you breathe

[Bridge]
Don't you worry, now you're safe, you little thing
Daddy will come back and therefore he will sing
Sing a precious lullaby to you, he will
While mama smokes her cancer to the dawn still

[Chorus]
Closer to encourage and I'll be awake
Sing yourself to sleep, learn not to be afraid
All you have is God, always in bribery
While your lungs are filled with all the smoke you breathe

[Chorus]
Closer to encourage and I'll be awake
Sing yourself to sleep, learn not to be afraid
All you have is God, always in bribery
While your lungs are filled with all the smoke you breathe

Trivia[]

Notes[]

  1. While there is no definitive proof that Take Me to the Moon is classified as an EP, several factors suggest that it is. These include the number of tracks, the lengths of these tracks, and the overall context surrounding its release. These elements collectively point to it being an EP rather than a full-length album.
