"Psycho Lovers" is an unreleased song by Melanie Martinez. It was originally intended to be featured on her debut album, Cry Baby. However, the song was later scrapped. This song has not been performed live or officially released. The full song leaked on June 4th, 2021.
Theme
The song is told from the perspective of Cry Baby, and tells of her falling in love with a boy whom she starts to obsess over, it is made clear that she knows of her own infatuation hence the line "I've gone mental can't you tell?". She compares her love similarly to that of a drug and states that when ever he leaves she feels weak-kneed, she grows so fond of him that she starts collecting the hair he leaves behind and watches him sleep saying "Is this what psycho lovers do?", this likely means that the boy might also feel the same way, though it is not made clear.
Cross-references
- As in "Mad Hatter", the song makes a reference to Lewis Carroll's famous book, "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland", that can be perceived in the line "Will you follow me down here?, Down the rabbit hole my dear".
