"Psycho Lovers" is an unreleased song by Melanie Martinez. It was originally recorded in the sessions of her debut album, Cry Baby, however, it was later scrapped.
The full song was leaked on June 4, 2021.
Background[]
Melanie mentioned this song in a post on Facebook on February 28, 2014.[1] This suggests that the song was intended to be released on an early draft of the album along with the other songs mentioned.
On March 16, 2014, Melanie teased the lyric to the bridge of the song on her social media.[2]
Theme[]
The song seems to be told from the perspective of Cry Baby, and tells of her falling in love with a boy whom she starts to obsess over. It is made clear that she knows of her own infatuation, hence the line "I've gone mental, can't you tell?" and she states that without him she could lose her mind even more. She compares her love to the effects of a drug. She grows so fond of him that she starts stalking him; collecting the hair he leaves behind as well, and even watching him sleep. She asks herself if she is acting like a psycho and if this behavior is what 'psycho lovers' do.
