Portals Parfums is a fragrance line inspired by Melanie Martinez's third studio album, PORTALS. It is a collaboration between Melanie and Flower Shop Perfumes Co.. They have currently released four parfum scents, thirteen candles and two tote bags.

Debut Collection Set

Inspired by Melanie Martinez’s third album, Portals, each fragrance is designed to reflect one of the four classical elements. This 1 ft tall sculpture opens to reveal four wholly transportive compositions, creating vivid worlds that can be visited with just a little spritz.

Four scents were released on November 2, 2023, along with a statue which holds the vials in place. Each vial contained 15ml of parfum. The full set retailed for 275$ USD.

On January 3, 2024, the parfums were restocked and each vial was able to be ordered separately for 50$ USD each, with the individual vials being shipped out in February.

Candle Collection

A companion collection to Portals, the third album by Melanie Martinez. Uniquely transportive scented candles; one for every song on the album.

13 candles for each song on PORTALS were released on June 18, 2024. Each candle was 75$ USD. The candles were wrapped in ceramic eggs that were each hand painted and were packaged in trinket boxes. The boxes for each candle included a nameplate of the song's title.

On December 6, 2024, the candle collection were restocked and each candle has the same price of 75$ USD.

Your hands get heavy. You look down and realize your cup is being filled with fresh glowing water. You hear a whisper in your ear that says “this liquid is pure”, so you take a sip. That sip becomes a never ending chug, filling your body with crystalline light that makes you feel like you could burst. A thirst you never knew existed has now been quenched. Every vibrating thump that blesses the ground manifests waves of creative inspiration around your heart. You begin to feel a pink fire within your belly. A strong flame smelling of strawberries, pink peonies, jasmine and vanilla transmutes your exhaustion into vitality. ♡ ♡ ♡

Oh no! Your thoughts are fuzzy! Clouded with brain fog, you sit down on a mossy log and look around. Your eyes focus on the sun reflecting prisms of light off of your sword. You lift this metal sword high into the sky and feel a magnetic current pulse down your arm and up to your crown. A strong wind hits you. Suddenly you’re zapped with a clarity and thoughtfulness like never before. Words feel as clear as a herkimer diamond. As your feet create squishy wet prints in the mud, you stumble upon a soft tiny creature. Staring into their big glossy eyes makes you feel safe. There are 3 paths you can take so you ask this creature for guidance. They telepathically communicate to you that the left path is the true route to abundance. But in order to go down that road you must be generous at heart. Burning a hole through your pocket is the coin you were given. You give the sweet creature your coin and the left path opens up. Walking down, you see star jasmine flowers blooming. Light is pouring in at the end of the tunnel. You pass through a mossy archway revealing a beautiful garden smelling of green tea, turmeric leaf, lavender, and vanilla. This feels like home. 𓇢𓆸𓋼

On January 3, 2024, Melanie announced a restock of the parfums, along with a promotional video showcasing each individual scent.

March 21, 2024
On March 21, 2024, the Portals Parfums Instagram account revealed that the perfume line's restock was coming.

July 8, 2024
On July 8, 2024, an email was sent out to fans announcing that the individual perfumes were gonna be restocked the next day at 9 am PST/12 pm EST.

Candle Collection

June 18, 2024

On June 18, 2024, Portals Parfums officially released the Candle Collection. The collection had 13 candles, each representing a song on Melanie's third album PORTALS.

Controversies

When the product got announced, there was a discussion about the pricing of the collection. Some were disappointed that it wasn't possible to buy them individually, while some were discontent with the high price tag. This prompted Melanie to put out a statement in reply to an Instagram user:

you guys will be able to buy them separately and in different sizes this is just my initial offering for the first drop 💓 I wanted to stay true to my original concept of having all four elements in a giant 1FT tall art piece. This packaging is very expensive to create and I didn't want to give people something low quality. High quality products are expensive to make these days but I promise more affordable options will be released.💓

Furthermore, under the announcement post for the parfums, one account states that they think Melanie is a performative artist, who is making millions off of her art. Melanie denied this by stating:

I do not make millions. When the label pays money for my videos that’s how much money I go into debt for my art. I’m risking my stability and my ability to pay my bills everytime I make a video, or any kind of high quality art. You guys have such a skewed perspective. I don’t take brand deals even because it doesn’t align with my art. If I didn’t care about my audience I wouldn’t be staying up all night every night working so hard to create art with substance and constantly have to hear from my team how much of a risk I’m taking.💐

Certain people online have pointed out that the individual vials for the parfums have a close resemblance to butt plugs. Issac Lekach from Flower Shops Perfumes Co. have stated that they were inspired by Victorian tear catchers. They further talked about how the comparison brought more attention to the parfum line due to it's somewhat controversial nature.

If you have a fragrance, whether it's the bottle or the juice or what have you that 10/10 people like, it will flop. You need something that's going to be a topic of conversation. The reality is one, I hope people don't use it for that, but look, it's Victorian tear catchers right? That was the inspiration. So, Victorian tear catchers, butt plugs. You know, you decide.

Trivia

• The official Instagram account often reposts fanart related to the products and stories of fans that have ordered or received them.
• Although the perfume line has an official Facebook account, the account doesn't post anything.
• The statue was sculpted and modeled by Atypics Visuals.
• Melanie Martinez was the only person involved in the artistic and creative direction for the parfum collection, including its packaging, fragrance and design.
• Melanie claims that the fragrance collection is the most challenging but rewarding thing she's ever put out.
• Portals Parfums was named the wildest celebrity perfume scent of 2023 by Highsnobiety.
• The fragrance collection entered The Fragrance Foundation on January 8, 2024.
• In the perfume's final teaser, the studio instrumental from "NYMPHOLOGY" is used.
• Through an Instagram story, Melanie teased 50ml versions of each individual scent, which will have their own unique bottles. This will release sometime in 2024.
  • Based on the promotional Instagram posts, Water of Intuition will have a cup shaped bottle, Fiery Passion will have a wand shaped bottle, Air of Clarity will have a sword shaped bottle and Earthy Abundance will have a coin shaped bottle.
    • These all coincide with the gifts that the bioluminescent sprite gives you in the first promotional teasers, (the cup, wand, sword, and the coin).
    • The imagery used for the promotional material and fragrances are most likely inspired by the elements of the Minor Arcana set of Tarot Cards.
• Melanie's outfit in the official trailer is the same as the one from the "FAERIE SOIRÉE" music video.
  • This likely means that both videos were shot at a similar date.
• On April 11, 2024, the Portals Parfums was announced as a 2024 Finalist for Fragrance Foundation's Packaging of the Year Award.
