"Play Date" (sometimes stylized as "Playdate") is the fourteenth track by Melanie Martinez featured on the deluxe version of her debut album, Cry Baby. It is the first deluxe track on the album, the second being Teddy Bear and the third being Cake. On June 26, 2020, Play Date was included as the B-side to Fire Drill on Spotify.

On May 26, 2020, Melanie released a lyric video for the song due to its rise in popularity on TikTok. She previously stated that she was working on a homemade music video during the COVID-19 pandemic, but later decided to cancel the project and focus on her extended play, After School.

On October 25, 2020 the demo of the song was leaked. It had previously been teased on the After-School All-Stars TikTok livestream.

Theme

This tells the story of Cry Baby feeling like she’s nothing more than a friend to someone who seems to care very little about her, even though they get together often. Frustrated, she outwardly proclaims she is just as uncommitted as he is, and how she's tired of all the games she has to play to stay with him. She wishes she didn’t care about how little he communicates or how much she has to chase after him, but she can't stop thinking about him. The entirety of the song is one contradiction after the next.

While swearing she couldn't care less about him, in the final moments of the song she admits she does care about him and does value their "play date".

Remix

On June 17, 2020, a remix of the song with American music duo 100 Gecs was released due to the song's rise in popularity on TikTok. However, the remix was later pulled from streaming services due to the duo not wanting to be associated with Melanie because of the allegations made against her by Timothy Heller back in December 2017. The remix is currently unreleased, but it has leaked in full. As with many other unreleased songs, most snippets of the song that are uploaded on YouTube, SoundCloud or other similar content-sharing websites will most likely be taken down.

• There is a clean version of this song, however, it was only available on iTunes and the Middle Eastern music streaming service, Anghami.
  • In the clean version, the word "fuck" in the chorus is barely censored.
  • As of mid-2020, this version was made available in multiple countries on other streaming services such as Spotify.
• Play Date was the only song from the Cry Baby era to be performed during the CAN’T WAIT TILL I’M OUT OF K-12 virtual concert held in December 2020, as the rest of the songs were from K-12 and After School.
• This song, along with the songs Teddy Bear and Cake, despite being on the deluxe version of Cry Baby, is not part of Cry Baby's story, though she still is the main character of them.
