Melanie Martinez's hair is a signature part of her artistry, with her hair color constantly changing. This page features all of the different colors her hair has been throughout the years.

Evolution[]

Melanie's hair is naturally brown. Soon before she auditioned for The Voice, she dyed half of her hair blonde and the other part black. Melanie constantly changes the color of the blonde side, while the black side remains always the same.

During the Cry Baby era, Melanie switched to wearing wigs since her hair was being damaged from all of the bleach she had to use to color it.

During the K-12 era, Melanie's hair was mostly either blonde and black or pink and black, with other hair colors being wigs.

During the After School EP era, Melanie's hair was mostly either blonde and black, styled in her new hair cut, a mullet, and sometimes adorn with with other hair pieces.

During the PORTALS era, Melanie is often seen wearing a wig, as well full body prosthetics and/or a mask. The wig color varies greatly from each look. Sometimes, she doesn't wear wigs. In The Trilogy Tour, Melanie's hair was back to her signature split-dye color for parts of the set.

Single colors[]

Brown[]

For most of Melanie's life before The Voice, her hair was her natural hair color, brown.

Blonde[]

Melanie's hair was fully blonde when she played Basic Bitch in "Pacify Her". Additionally, in "Mrs. Potato Head", Melanie puts on a blonde wig when playing Cry Baby. Her hair was fully blonde for a few other occasions.

Split-dye[]

Blonde and black[]

The blonde and black split-dye hairstyle has been an iconic hairstyle of Melanie since the start of her musical career. For much of Melanie's time on The Voice, her hair was blonde and black - this was her first discoloration. This look was inspired by Cruella de Vil.


During the Cry Baby era, Melanie would sometimes wear wigs that were blonde and black. Melanie wore wigs because she said, quote (now from a deleted interview), “my hair is dead from all the times I’ve bleached it.” She has this hair color in the music videos for "Sippy Cup", "Cry Baby", "Alphabet Boy", "Milk and Cookies", "Pacify Her", "Mrs. Potato Head", "Mad Hatter", as well as the promotional video for "Soap".


Throughout the K-12 film, Melanie's hair has mostly been blonde and black.

In the PORTALS era, her hair is blonde and black from the few times her face has been shown and she started wearing a long blond and black wig in The Trilogy Tour.

Blue and black[]

For Melanie's final night performing on The Voice, she dyed the blonde side of her hair blue. This was the first time the blonde side of her hair was a different color, and was done with blue hairspray. During Dollhouse and Cry Baby era, she dyed and wore blue wigs several times.

Melanie wore a light blue and black wig in Cry Baby and K-12 parts of some The Trilogy Tour's shows.

Purple and black[]

Melanie dyed her hair purple for the first time in 2012. For the "Dollhouse" music video, Melanie's hair was black and pink/purple. In the music video for "Pity Party", Melanie wore a black and purple wig, along with another style that was purple - gray and black. Similarly, her hair was fuchsia and black in "Mad Hatter"

Teal and black[]

For the "Carousel" music video and the live videos of "Dollhouse" and "Carousel", Melanie's hair was black and teal with pink tips.

Pink and black[]

During the Cry Baby era, Melanie would sometimes wear wigs that were pink and black. Occasions include the Cry Baby cover shoot, the music video for "Pacify Her" and "Mad Hatter", and the double feature for "Soap" and "Training Wheels"

During the After School EP era, Melanie often had pink and black hair.

Green and black[]

During the Cry Baby era, Melanie would sometimes wear wigs that were green and black. She also wore a green and black wig once during The Trilogy Tour.

Silver/gray and black[]

In the "Cry Baby" music video, Melanie's hair is black and silver. Similarly, in the "Tag You're It"/"Milk and Cookies" double feature, her hair was black and gray with a purple tint. Additionally, her hair is silver and black in the beginning of "Mad Hatter".

Her hair was silver and black in the "Drama Club" music video, and her hair appeared gray and black in many other occasions.

Melanie's hair was gray and black in the music video for "The Bakery", as well as some photo shoots.

Melanie wore a gray and black wig in certain Trilogy Tour shows.

Brown and black[]

In the music video for "Mad Hatter", Melanie's hair was ginger/brown and black. This was the first and only time that she wore a black and brown/ginger wig.

Coral and black[]

In K-12, Melanie's hair can seldom be seen as coral and black.

Orange and black[]

The first and only time Melanie wore a black and orange wig was in the music video for "Orange Juice".

Pastel and black[]

During the Dollhouse era, Melanie's hair color changed constantly. It was usually pastel colors.

In the beginning of K-12, Melanie wore a wig with a blend of many pastel colors.

The Creature[]

Throughout the PORTALS era, Melanie is often seen in full prosthetic makeup, and she wears wigs of various different colors to dress up as her character, Cry Baby's new form known as The Creature. In this era, Melanie wears wigs of more unique colors, such as green and blue.

Trivia[]

  • Melanie was inspired to dye her hair by the Disney villain, Cruella de Vil.
    • She also said in an interview, that she likes this kind of hairstyle because she loves that idea of the contrast between light and dark.
    • For Halloween of 2015, Melanie dressed up as Cruella. She posted a picture on Instagram of herself in her costume.
  • Melanie stated in an interview that she had to start wearing wigs, as her hair was becoming weak because of how many times she has dyed it.[1]
  • Melanie has done a performance in a wig that is completely blonde.
  • William Scott Blair does all of Melanie's hair for her music videos and has created many of her wigs.
