Controversy[]

Upon the unexpected announcement, many members of Melanie's fandom disagreed with her decision to launch an NFT collection.[ex. 1][ex. 2][ex. 3][note 1] Many believed it would go against her publicized morals and the lyrical content of her songs that include anti-capitalistic points because of its environmental impact and profound economic exploitation.[7][8][9] In response to this, Melanie[note 2] posted a statement in which clarified the opposite of what had been said.[10][11][12][13][14] She* first mentioned the reason why she had released the collection,

[I] just wanna be transparent about my NFTs coming out this week and give you all the info you need. ... These [little] creatures have been a huge inspiration for my art for years now. They hold deep sentimental value for me and I know a lot of you collect them as well. I wanted to bring them to life in the digital world for you to enjoy. ... Digital ownership during this day and age of social media is something I care about, given I have had the highest amount of hacked [and/or] leaked music and art on my label. I've witnessed people illegally profit off of my hard work, time, and time again, and creating digital art as an NFT offers protection of this art that I find to be valuable.[11]

followed by its environmental concern and misconception,

I, as well as many of you, have concerns about NFTs regarding their impact on the environment. This is why I made sure to partner with a company that works with Aerial ... [Aerial is] a sustainability platform that calculates the carbon emissions based on associated energy use. The carbon offsets of my NFTs are allocated to high-quality forest conservation projects verified by [the] American Carbon Registry. I want to clarify that I would not be doing thee NFTs without the partnership with Aerial.[12]

Even though Melanie* had made the statement, a magnitude of her fanbase still disagreed with the action.[ex. 4][ex. 5][ex. 6] Some users pointed out that the platform uses Ethereum,[15] and any form of Ethereum blockchain was still harmful to the planet regardless of its modifications;[7][ex. 7] Aerial's execution regards compensation rather than prevention.[16][note 3]

Notes[]

  1. Readers are encouraged to research the community's response on their own as well.
  2. Although the declaration was posted on Melanie's Instagram account, some fans speculate the disclosure was rather written by a manager of Melanie instead, due to its textual formatting.
  3. Although used as an excuse by Melanie* to proceed with the project, Aerial does not prevent NFTs from implementing harsh environmental impact. Aerial, rather, compensates for carbon emission - supporting conservation projects. The NFTs Melanie publicized are still harmful nonetheless.
