People describe this place of a shower of light, it's like you're being- there's a light that's cleansing you and restoring you to your original vibration and it's kind of removing all of the "earth muck" that you have from your last lifetime to be able to help you go back to your original state as a soul or as a being. I thought that was a beautiful double-meaning for just wanting to essentially cleanse yourself of any trauma or hurt or pain or suffering from just dealing with life.

"LIGHT SHOWER" is a song by Melanie Martinez. that is featured as the fifth track on her third studio album, PORTALS.
Melanie uploaded a snippet of the song on February 20, 2023. The full song was first performed live at Lollapalooza Chile on March 21, 2023. It was officially released for the standard version of PORTALS on March 31, 2023. The music video was released on May 11, 2024.
Background[]
This song was one of the earliest songs Melanie wrote for PORTALS. In the Apple Music interview attached to PORTALS release, Melanie revealed the background of the song:
There is a place in the afterlife people under hypnosis describe as a soul cleansing or a shower of light. A place where gem-colored rays of light shine through every inch of your soul, cleansing your spirit of the trauma it had experienced during your last lifetime. Restoring you to your original vibration. I remember reading about this sitting on the roof of my garage, imagining what it would feel like while the warmth of the sun was hitting me. A few weeks later I sat in my bathtub with my guitar and stayed up all night writing a love song about this light, in order to create layered meaning. This was also the very first song I ever wrote for this album.
Melanie uploaded a snippet of the song to Instagram on February 20, 2023, with the caption "Developing."[1] The snippet was an animated video with art done in collaboration with 3D graphic artists Sarah Badr, Elijah Diaz, and Liam Archibald.[1] The video later became unavailable but it was re-uploaded shortly after.
On March 21, 2023 a fan account on Instagram, @akacrybabys, was granted one of the multiple synthetic eggs used to promote the album. It contained an extended snippet of "LIGHT SHOWER" through a USB drive. Other than that, the box also contained an edible white chocolate egg, and inside with a note:
Hatch me. A piece of the puzzle has been given to you. Eat the shell, eat the goo. What's inside is important, so please do share. I trust that you'll handle this portal with care.
Also on March 21, 2023, Melanie uploaded an extended snippet of the song on Instagram with the caption: "you are the light I've been searching for forever 🕯️". [2]
The song was confirmed as the fifth track on PORTALS on March 17, 2023, through Melanie's social media.[3] The song's lyrics were revealed on March 23, 2023, on Melanie's official website.[4]
On May 11, 2024, the music video was shown to the public, in Seattle on the first show of The Trilogy Tour, and was later uploaded to YouTube several minutes later.
On February 27, 2025, it was confirmed that the song's music video has been nominated at The Hollywood Music Video Awards in the categories of "Best Animation" and "Best Visual Effects".[5]
On April 4, 2025, the song's music video was officially announced to have won the nomination for the category of "Best Animation" at The Hollywood Music Video Awards.[6]

Music video[]
The music video seems to take place in a dream-like state from The Creature's head after the events of "FAERIE SOIREE".
The video starts with "LIGHT SHOWER" carved on stone with moss surrounding it with which The Creature, unexpectedly in a snail form crawls on. Throughout the video, The Creature crawls through different terrains while following a light orb.
They are first seen crawling through a desert at sunrise as they find a glowing light orb. It then seems to act as a guide for The Creature as they follow it throughout their journey on the sandy terrain.
Time has passed, as it is now morning. The light orb is seen leading The Creature from the dry and harsh desert environment, to a more palletable rainforest. As The Creature crawls through the surface, many flowers and plants begin to sprout from its slimy trail. They are seen crossing through pink mushrooms as more flowers sprout on the back of their surroundings. They are then faced with a river, which would make them unable to follow the light orb. Fortunately, The Creature finds a stone bridge, which helps them get to their final destination.
As they near the end of their journey, the light orb leads her to a cave with rain and light seeping from above. The Creature starts to open their mouth, as the orb starts to enter her body with her ultimately swallowing it. Her body starts glowing and her shell starts cracking until it explodes, with The Creature now retransformed back into her normal form; starting to levitate upwards into the purifying shower of rain and light as the video ends while fading to white.
