"Kids" is a song originally by MGMT that Melanie Martinez covered. She uploaded it to her YouTube channel on June 13th, 2009[1], but the video was later taken down, however, the audio is available online.

She also performed it live during her set at Teen Acoustic Cafe on August 7th, 2009.

Theme

This song is about the different stages of life. When you are born, you are an innocent child making your parents proud. As you grow older, you begin to fall into society's ways and you lose your innocence. The bad things around you begin to haunt you.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
You were a child
Crawling on your knees toward him
Making momma so proud
But your voice is too loud
We like to watch you laughing
Picking insects off of plants
No time to think of consequences

[Chorus]
Control yourself
Take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanting to be haunted
Control yourself
Take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanting to be haunted

[Verse 2]
The water is warm
But it's sending me shivers
A baby is born
Crying out for attention
Memories fade
Like looking through a fogged mirror
Decisions too
Decisions are made and not bought
But I thought this wouldn't hurt a lot
I guess not

[Chorus]
Control yourself
Take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanting to be haunted
Control yourself
Take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanting to be haunted

[Chorus]
Control yourself
Take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanting to be haunted
Control yourself
Take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanting to be haunted
Control yourself
Take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanting to be haunted
Control yourself
Take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanting to be haunted
