Background
"I Scream" was intended to be featured on Melanie's debut album, Cry Baby, however, it was later scrapped. Afterwards, the song was reworked and rescheduled to be released in 2016, this time including Snow Tha Product as the main artist with Melanie as a feature, however, Atlantic Records turned back the release then the song was scrapped once for all.
Snippets of this song began to surface on July 28, 2019. The song's first solo mix was leaked on January 4, 2020 and the full song was leaked in high quality on January 5, 2020. The original version of the song was leaked on May 16, 2021.

Background
The song was originally recorded by Melanie Martinez and produced by CJ Baran in 2015, and initially intended for Melanie's debut album Cry Baby. The first known version of the song is from this time.
After scrapping the song from the album, Melanie gave the song to rapper Snow Tha Product. Snow originally planned to release the song in 2016, however, she claims that Atlantic Records would not allow her to do so, possibly because she was not very famous at the time although the reason itself is not so clear.
On January 6, 2020, Snow Tha Product confirmed that if the song gained enough popularity, she would be able to release it."... if it gets popular enough, I guarantee that the label that made it would not stop something gaining popularity so fast."[1][2]
There are 4 known versions of the song:
- Cry Baby version - The original Cry Baby 2015 solo version. This one has Melanie singing verses along with the chorus. Snippets started circulating in September 2020 and the full song leaked on May 16, 2021.
- Hook version - This version only includes only Melanie's chorus with instrumental verses (3:27). This was the demo she made with the intention of pitching to other artists. It leaked on January 4, 2020.[3]
- Rough demo - This is the third version of the song, featuring Snow's parts which weren't included on previous demos, however it has unfinished production. It leaked on January 5, 2020.
- Final version - The final version of the song which has both Melanie and Snow, but updated production. A snippet of this version leaked in late 2019.
Theme
This song is from the perspective of a person who may seem sweet and passive on the outside; however, they are rather cold and aggressive on the inside. An ice cream is used as a metaphor for this kind of personality.
Cross-References
