I’ve always felt like I was a cry baby, I’m so emotional and I take things very personally, and I’ve been made fun of for that. The name has stuck with me. This album is me figuring out how to embrace being imperfect and accepting the things I can’t change about myself, and being happy and comfortable with who I am. In the beginning, when I started writing, I was insecure. As the album went on I got more comfortable with myself. It’s interesting because what happens to my character also happened to me through the writing process of the album.

Cry Baby, alternatively stylized as Crybaby, is the debut studio album by Melanie Martinez. It was released on August 14, 2015, by Atlantic Records through digital download, CD, cassette, and vinyl. The album debuted in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 200 albums chart, placing a spot at #6 with 40,000 total copies sold in its first week. It also topped the Billboard Alternative Albums chart by dominating at #1.
Background[]
Melanie began recording for an unreleased EP shortly after being eliminated from The Voice. By 2013, the EP was completed and was ready to be released, however, Melanie later scrapped it after recording her song "Dollhouse" which led her to change her sound and start working on a new album.
In January 2014, Melanie confirmed the name of the album.[1] In May 2014, Melanie released her debut EP, Dollhouse, and announced that summer that she hoped to have her album out around October. However, Melanie instead released the music video for her song "Carousel" on October 15, 2014, and postponed her release date for her album, and stated that she hoped to have it out in the spring of 2015. The first single from her debut album was "Pity Party" and was confirmed on May 27, 2015. The music video was accidentally leaked by Melanie herself on May 29, 2015; however, Melanie later said on Twitter that she was happy and excited for the fans who had already saw it and promised there was "more to come" during her live stream on June 1, 2015. [citation needed] "Pity Party" was officially released as the first single from the album on June 1, 2015, the day of Melanie's livestream.
During the livestream, Melanie announced that the release date of Cry Baby would be in August. She also revealed that the album would be available to pre-order soon. The album's second single, "Soap", was confirmed in late June, and it was announced soon before it was to be released as the second single from the album on July 10, 2015, with the one-shot music video being released the same day. On July 16, 2015, the album art and release date were leaked on Amazon, although the release date was false. The following day, on July 17, 2015, the album art was officially revealed, and merch bundles were available to pre-order on Melanie's website, with the digital pre-order on July 24, 2015. Before then, the track list of the album was leaked, although the websites that leaked it replaced "Play Date" with "Half Hearted". The final track list was officially revealed with the album pre-order on July 24, 2015.
Starting on July 27, 2015, Melanie released a snippet of each song (apart from "Dollhouse", "Carousel", and the bonus tracks) on her Instagram. On July 28, 2015, Melanie released the snippet for "Sippy Cup" and announced that it would be released as the third and final single from the album on July 31, 2015. SPIN Magazine premiered the music video on July 30, 2015 and "Sippy Cup" was released as the third and final single from the album the day after.
The album was officially released on August 14, 2015 in digital, CD, vinyl and cassette format.
Cry Baby's Extra Clutter EP, an EP on vinyl with the album's 3 deluxe tracks as well as the Christmas single "Gingerbread Man" was released exclusively at Urban Outfitters on November 25, 2016.
The Cry Baby Coloring Book, a coloring book that featured illustrations from the storybook as well as illustrations for the bonus tracks, was released at Barnes & Noble a few days after the release of the Cry Baby's Extra Clutter EP on November 29, 2016. The coloring book was also eventually sold at Urban Outfitters.
Cry Baby Perfume Milk, a perfume stylized after the album, was released on February 17, 2017.
In 2020, the album started getting popular again due to the bonus track "Play Date" rising in popularity on the video sharing app TikTok.
Tours[]

Melanie first began a pre-tour for the album in June 2015, where only one date was promoted. This was until July & August 2015, where she continued the tour for 3 more dates. The tour only occurred in the United States. All performances after June were done stripped-down.

Melanie embarked on the Cry Baby Tour in 2015 in North America. She performed all songs from the standard version of the album, and one of the deluxe tracks or "Gingerbread Man" as an encore. During a 6-month break from the tour, Melanie embarked on two other tours which happened in Europe and Oceania. They all eventually concluded in 2016.

In 2024, Melanie embarked on The Trilogy Tour, a tour featuring songs from her first 3 albums, Cry Baby, K-12 and PORTALS. Out of 16 songs, 9 of them are performed. while six of them were shortened. For each show, Melanie will mostly have a different outfit.
Story[]
This album tells the story of Cry Baby, a fictionalized version of Melanie and a representation of her unfortunate childhood and her vulnerable and messed-up side. Melanie claims that many of the things that have happened to Cry Baby are similar to the things that have happened in her own life,[2] mixed in with fantasy elements. Each song on the track list is titled something childhood related, while the actual message being crossed to the listener carries more adult-like themes and problems.
The storybook available in the pre-order bundle features rhymes and illustrations based on the album. It was written by Melanie herself, and the illustrations were drawn by her ex-friend Chloe Tersigni.

There are 13 tracks on the CD, with 3 additional tracks on the deluxe version. There are currently 64 songs that were intended for Cry Baby, but only some of them made the final cut (46 tracks are unreleased, 18 tracks are released). In an interview with The KnockTurnal, Melanie revealed that she would've loved to include more songs on the album, but "she can’t put 30 songs on an album".[3]
There is both an explicit version and a clean version of the album. The standard album contains five explicit songs and eight non-explicit songs, while the deluxe version contains seven explicit songs, and nine non-explicit songs. This is Melanie's least explicit standard album; tied with PORTALS.

Promotional sampler[]
Before the official release of Cry Baby a promotional sampler of the album titled "Melanie Martinez," was released in 2015 by Atlantic Records. This CD, containing six tracks from her debut album Cry Baby, was exclusively distributed to media outlets for promotional purposes. Each copy was individually watermarked to prevent unauthorized distribution, and the CD was packaged in a clear slimline case with a single-sided insert.[5]

On April 29, 2014, American record producer and songwriter Dre Skull, posted in a now-deleted tweet that he was in the studio with Melanie Martinez.[6]
On July 30, 2014, Melanie Martinez and British singer-songwriter Talay Riley posted two Tweets indicating that they were in the studio along with American record producer Rey Reel writing "the sweetest song".[7][8]
Melanie Martinez is credited as one of the artists that the producer and songwriter J Soundz has worked with.[9] It is believed that he produced songs intended for Cry Baby, as most of his genres are Hip Hop, Pop, and R&B-Soul, which also fit into the album's genre.

Early concepts[]
In February 2014, Melanie had different plans for the album. One of its earliest versions was not story-driven; Melanie also decided to rework 2013 EP tracks such as "A Million Men", "Birthing Addicts" and "Dear Porcupines", but it's unknown if she ever got around to actually remaking them. "A Thousand Words" was also considered for inclusion on the project, but it's believed that she was simply going to use the EP version from 2013 as it seems to fit the album's sound during that time period.[10][11]
"Bones Are Blue", "Night Mime" and "Rough Love" are 2013 EP tracks that were actually known to be reworked for Cry Baby. The new version of "Night Mime" was recorded in late 2013 and produced by Robopop which then got performed live multiple times in 2014.
The "Bones Are Blue" and "Rough Love" remakes were made in February 2014 with production by Redd Lights, following Melanie's Gramercy Theatre performance earlier that month. Melanie didn't acknowledge the 2 songs at all after reworking them and never performed them again.
"Coloring Book" was a title that Melanie considered for the album. It was later proven to be a real song, meant to replace "Cry Baby". "Coloring Book"'s lyrics gives a rough idea of the album's earliest story-driven version, including the track list, although nothing is 100% confirmed.
On her Tumblr page, where she would usually update fans about the album, she posted two drawings with the title "not sure if productive is the right word to describe my night part 2". The first drawing is supposedly a early draft of the album cover, showing Melanie with twintails and a fluffy vest, slightly showing her nipples. On the background, a purple glittery with balloons and rainbow straps on the top could be seen, accompanied with the title "CRYBABY" made of balloons.
