"Cake" is a song by Melanie Martinez that is featured as the sixteenth and final track on the deluxe version of her debut album, Cry Baby. It is also featured as the third track on her third extended play (EP), Cry Baby's Extra Clutter.
Background[]
Melanie's father, Jose Martinez, teased the studio version of this song on his Twitter on March 1st, 2015.[1]
Melanie confirmed that "Cake" would be a deluxe track for the album at one of her concerts. She confirmed this again during a livestream via Periscope on June 1st, 2015. A snippet of the song was posted in the spring of 2015.
Theme[]
This song is about Cry Baby and a boy having all the chemistry it takes to be in a relationship, but he just wants to have sex with her and does not want a real relationship. She refuses to let him have sex with her because she knows that once she does, he will leave her behind. She decides to break up with him before he can break up with her. Cry Baby states that if he considers her a "cake" than she considers him "meat", meaning if he can use her, she can use him as well. Cry Baby notes that meat can be replaced easily, whereas a piece of cake is uniquely made and harder to throw away without regretting due to its looks and taste.
Lyrics[]
[Verse 1]
Your skin is warm like an oven
Your kiss is sugary sweet
Your fingers feel like cotton
When you put your arms around me
It feels like I'm just missing
Something whenever you leave
We've got all the ingredients
Except you loving me
[Pre-chorus 1]
And respectfully
[Chorus]
I'm not a piece of cake
For you to just discard
While you walk away
With the frosting of my heart
So I'm taking back
What's mine, you'll miss
The slice of Heaven
I gave to you last night
[Verse 2]
You smell just like vanilla
You taste like buttercream
You're filling up my senses
With empty calories
It feels like I'm just missing
Something whenever you leave
We've got all the ingredients
Except you needing me
[Pre-chorus 2]
So respectfully
[Chorus]
I'm not a piece of cake
For you to just discard
While you walk away
With the frosting of my heart
So I'm taking back
What's mine, you'll miss
The slice of Heaven
I gave to you last night
[Breakdown]
If I am just a piece of cake
I am just a piece of cake (cake)
Then, you're just a piece of meat
You're a piece of meat to me
If I am just a piece of cake
I am just a piece of cake (cake)
Then, you're just a piece of meat
You're a piece of meat to me
[Chorus]
I'm not a piece of cake
for you to just discard
While you walk away
With the frosting of my heart
So I'm taking back
What's mine, you'll miss
The slice of Heaven
I gave to you last night
[Outro]
The slice of Heaven that I gave
The slice of Heaven that I gave to you
The slice of Heaven that I gave to you last night

- It was originally intended to be on the standard edition of Cry Baby, but was scrapped and was instead made a bonus track.
