"Birthing Addicts" is an unreleased song by Melanie Martinez. It was intended to be the third track on her extended play[note 1], Take Me to the Moon[2], however, the project was later scrapped. It was then repurposed for her 2013 EP which was also eventually scrapped.
A live performance of the song was posted to Melanie's YouTube channel on January 16, 2012, but it was later taken down. The 2013 EP version was leaked on May 17, 2021.
Background[]
Melanie wrote the song in 2011 for an extra credit assignment in school, and she ended up getting an A. It is based on the book Go Ask Alice.[citation needed]
Theme[]
Birthing Addicts is about mothers carelessly letting their children engage in poor decisions, behaviors, and habits. It depicts the children of these mothers as spoiled and prone to indulging in unhealthy practices like smoking and intravenous drugs. Ultimately, the actions that are not stopped by their mothers permanently damages the children's lives with "thick black lungs," cancer, and Alzheimer's Disease.
Lyrics[]
[Verse 1]
Pupils begin to observe
Watching the waste on this earth
Mamas don't love their kids like they used to
Letting them smoke their herbs
Nails bitten down to the nub
Palms light on fire as they rub
Soup never reaches its boil
Dinner ain't the only thing they spoil
[Chorus]
Let the maggots and worms infest your brains
Cut your memory off, Alzheimer's begins
Let that hell of a drug emerge in your veins
And I will claim that I love you
I am the one who birthed you
[Verse 2]
Skin tearin' down to the bone
Freckles fall off as they're told
You realize soon your identity changes
No longer the person you were
No longer the person they adore
[Chorus]
Let the maggots and worms infest your brains
Cut your memory off, Alzheimer's begins
Let that hell of a drug emerge in your veins
And I will claim that I love you
I am the one who birthed you
[Bridge]
Thank you mama for all you've done
Gave me cancer and thick black lungs
Left me rotting on the street
Rather shoot up than have food to eat
[Chorus]
Let the maggots and worms infest your brains
Cut your memory off, Alzheimer's begins
Let that hell of a drug emerge in your veins
And I will claim that I love you
I am the one who birthed you
I am the one who birthed you
[Outro]
Do-do-do-do-do-do-do
Do-do-do-do-do-do-do
Mamas don't love their kids like they used to
Letting them smoke their herbs

Notes[]
- ↑ While there is no definitive proof that Take Me to the Moon is classified as an EP, several factors suggest that it is. These include the number of tracks, the lengths of these tracks, and the overall context surrounding its release. These elements collectively point to it being an EP rather than a full-length album.
