The title of this page is unofficial. "2013 EP" is decided based off of fan-speculation or communal agreement. The page will be moved when the official name is revealed.

The unknown extended play, sometimes dubbed as "2013 EP", refers to an unreleased extended play by Melanie Martinez that was planned to be released around September 2013,[1][2] however, it was scrapped later that month prior to the release. The official name of the EP has yet to surface.[3]

Background[]

After leaving The Voice, Melanie began to write songs for the project on December 5, 2012. The earliest known song written and recorded for this project is "Bones Are Blue".[citation needed] She also recorded more self-produced acoustic worktapes in order to send them to producers.

She had her first studio session at a currently unknown studio with currently unknown writers/producers on January 7, 2013,[4] however, it is speculated that those sessions were with the producer and songwriter Ebonie Smith, who had mentioned that she worked with Melanie on "early acoustic sessions".[5]

On February 14, 2013, she went to the studio with THE ELEV3N.[6][7] There she got the songs done with a more "rock-ish" genre. The only known songs she did with them are "Birthing Addicts" and "Dear Porcupines". She later performed these exact versions live.[citation needed]

On May 8, 2013, Melanie went to the studio with John Feldmann. She recorded "A Thousand Words" and "Rough Love" with him and Neon Hitch.[8][9] She also helped co-write Neon Hitch's song "Last Chapter (Never Stayed for Love)", which she might've recorded a demo for. This session is likely what made Melanie change directions in what she wanted to do with the EP.

Early on in June 2013 Melanie recorded stripped down acoustic versions of the songs with Miles Nasta.[citation needed] It is likely this was done in order for Melanie to send out professionally made demos to more producers, as other artists did similar practices at the time. As of right now, we only know of two songs getting these demos produced, "A Million Men" and "Bones Are Blue".

On June 16, 2013, and June 30, 2013, Melanie took to the studio with Doveman.[10] Within these sessions, "Birthing Addicts", "Curly Cue", "Dear Porcupines", "I Think I'm Crazy" and "Time Flies" were recorded.[11] These are likely the final versions recorded for these songs. She also later performed these versions live.[citation needed]

On June 25, 2013, and June 26, 2013, Melanie went to the studio with Robopop where she recorded "Bittersweet Tragedy" and "Mistakes".[12] Melanie teased "Bittersweet Tragedy" multiple times, suggesting it was likely going to be released on the EP, whereas "Mistakes" was likely recorded as a pitch song.[13][14][15][16]

Melanie also had sessions with other producers during that time, such as with SmarterChild, Larzz Principato, Syience, Michael Mazzota and Charles Joseph. Melanie promoted the EP by performing the songs during livestreams and concerts throughout 2013.[17][18] She would collect money from her livestreams and StageIt shows to help fund the EP.[19]

Jose Martinez confirmed that the EP was almost done on July 23, 2013,[20] and Melanie also revealed that she had done a photoshoot for the EP's cover with Jordan Tiberio, however, a few of the photos, including the cover art, were corrupted, causing her to have to do another one.[21] Melanie also tweeted around August 21, 2013, that the EP was coming out "very soon". This indicates that the EP was about to be finished and was close to being released. Melanie also revealed in another tweet on September 9, 2013, that she had plans for an official merchandise line inspired by the EP following its release.[22]

Later in September 2013, Melanie decided to scrap the EP after she met Kinetics and One Love and the trio wrote their first collaboration together, "Dollhouse", in their first studio session on September 19, 2013.[23] Melanie "wanted to keep writing songs that were inside that world", referring to how this song ended up leading her to start working on the Cry Baby album with a new sound.[24] Instead of releasing the 2013 EP, Melanie decided to release the Dollhouse EP the following year in May 2014.
